Release Notes

19/07/2016 | Version : 2.3 | Size : 99.4 MB
Pixelmator 2.3 for iOS brings an incredible Quick Selection Tool, a powerful and precise Magnetic Selection Tool, features many small, but awesome improvements to the selection experience on iOS, and more.

New:
• The advanced Quick Selection Tool lets you make incredibly accurate selections.
• The smart Magnetic Selection Tool snaps precisely to the objects you trace.
• Many small, but awesome changes improve the selection experience on iOS.

Selection improvements:
• When making selections, you can now tap Invert to invert your selection.
• The outline of selections made with the Color Selection Tool is more precise thanks to a content-aware smoothing algorithm.
• The all-new marching ants design improves performance and has ants that actually march around your selections.
• The Color Selection Tool is now faster (especially on older devices).
• Added a Create New selection mode, which is now the default.
• A live preview of your final selection is now shown when using the Add or Subtract selection modes.
• You can now transform selections in the Arrange pane.
• Selections now snap to layers and the canvas, just like layers do (but you can turn this off by turning off Guides).
• Selections made with the Free Selection, Rectangle Selection, and Ellipse Selection tools now always snap to pixels, meaning there won’t be any unwanted, half-transparent pixels at the edges of a selection when you copy, delete, or transform it.
• The selection paths of the Free Selection Tool are now made up of twice as many points, which makes them smoother.
• When you open up Select with an already selected area, the selection tool that you were using previously will automatically become active.
• When moving a selected area, dragging inside the selection will move it, and dragging outside the selection will now pan the image.
• The selection outline that is added as you select with the Free Selection Tool now has a subtle animation.
• When making selections with the Quick Selection or Color Selection tools, the selection preview now fades into the marching ants.
• Tapping Undo after transforming a selected area sometimes used to make that area flicker. Fixed.
• When using the Free Selection Tool, quickly tapping could sometimes make really small selections instead of adding points. Fixed.

Improvements and bug fixes:
• Use a two finger double tap to zoom in or zoom to fit.
• The 9:16 aspect ratio is now in the list of ratios in Crop.
• The request to let Pixelmator access your Photos library wouldn’t appear if you tried to save to Photos before having opened an image from Photos – it does now.
• If you use Copy to Photos to save a new image to your Photos library, you’ll now be able to use Save to Photos to save over that new image.
• If you drag a layer that is not selected (the transform handles aren't visible) and it does not fit in the screen, the layer will not be moved. To move it – first, tap to select it.
• When you hold two fingers to rotate a layer but one or both fingers are outside the currently selected layer, other layers in your image will not be selected – first tap to select the layer you want to rotate, then hold two fingers inside it to start rotating.
• Zoom animations are a little more smooth as they now have subtle ease-out transitions.

Apple Pencil improvements and bug fixes:
• When using Apple Pencil, the brush size of the Quick Selection Tool is pressure-sensitive.
• Selections made using Apple Pencil and the Free Selection Tool are now more accurate.
• The transform handle area is now smaller, giving you more precision.

Pixelmator for iPhone improvements:
• The Select and Distort tool choosers are now laid out more symmetrically.
• The selection mode in the Select tool chooser is highlighted more clearly.
• Tapping to choose a selection mode will now close the Select tool chooser.

Comments and Ratings for Pixelmator

Excellent but lacks 'masking layer' and other GUI features! 🦄 (2.3)
03/02/2017 15:40:00 4/5 By RandomOmeba
Pixelmator is brilliant in that it provides a useful range of photo editing tools designed for touch screen. It's well designed and receives regular updates. Additionally the tool set includes brushes that can be used with the Apple Pencil as a drawing package which as a digital artist/designer makes Pixelmator even more attractive and useful as an image editor. One omission that really surprised me is that there is currently no dedicated grey scale masking layer capability which leaves you with no options for gradual blending of images or graphic design elements (you can make selections then blend edges) but this is somewhat creatively limited in comparison. If the maximum erase brush size and softness was increased considerably to fill the screen (on a big canvass) then it could be utilised to create similar effects (i.e. ultra soft erase brushing objects to blend them out) but it's far more technically demanding compared to the simplicity of using a dedicated mask! As such, this is something the Pixelmator team really should consider! Just imagine the creative potential of being able to 'paint' dedicated grey scale masks (which provide a full range of partial transparency) using the Apple Pencil with the available brushes and additional tools included! The creative possibilities are astonishing (uncovering detail, photography and colour swathes with brush styles to create beautiful artwork and graphic design)! Believe me this feature is also essential for creative photo manipulation. You could subsequently surgically replace the skyline in a scene, partially mask specific objects, seamlessly blend multiple image sources together using linear or radial gradients etc! This would be a truly amazing feature to add in a future update and would really take Pixelmator to the next level (or not if it continues to be ignored)! Aside from this I have to admit it's currently not the most intuitive software to use. You can't name layers so you have no idea what they contain (which unnecessarily breeds confusion)! Neither is there a basic transform tool for accurately placing objects (sure there's guides but they're not the same thing and besides you need both regardless)! Even basic regularly required tasks like switching layer visibility and locking layers etc; can't be done without multi tapping and diving through complex menus so it's difficult going for new users or people familiar with established creative software! Despite these issues (which are simple to improve upon by adding layer control icons and a labelling system etc), it's still a very useful design tool and photo editor with the essential tools present for photo correction (which lets remember is clearly it's primary task) and it also has a desktop counterpart to compliment it! In summary, it's thoughtfully developed and presented to a high level and thus comes highly recommended (please consider my feature requests though which would clearly help make already excellent software even better)!

Everything that ElectricPossum said !!! (2.3)

The review by ElectricPossum says it all. I could use copy and paste but would refer the serious reviewer to that review- perfection.

Great photo editing app (2.3)
30/01/2017 01:59:00 5/5 By Kazzj58
I have tried lots of photo editing apps, this is by far the best, easy to use, allows you to remove areas from your photos, adjust colour, blend layers and loads more. Super app

Camera Roll Saves is excellent but UI Layers is a mess (2.3)
24/01/2017 17:46:00 3/5 By M.Park
A mixed bag of an app. The apps integration with the photos app is on track to being a useful feature, once they bring in tools beyond filters. The ability to save over images in the photos roll, rather than saving duplicates is absolutely stellar. The problem part for me is the UI Layers and the way that tools function and the parameters to change them. I would like to see better warp tools and maybe facial recognition warping? Please improve the Layers though its such a vital part to the experience!

Great app but pricing wrong (2.3)
24/01/2017 15:54:00 2/5 By ipodicea
My only gripe is that Apple showed this as £0.49 but I seem to have been charged £4.98.

Powerful but lacks the essential 'masking layer'! (2.3)

Pixelmator is brilliant in that it provides a comprehensive range of photo editing tools designed for touch screen. It's well designed and intuitive to use and receives regular updates. Additionally the tool set is so broad it can be used with the Apple Pencil as a drawing package (as with Photoshop) which as a digital artist/designer makes it an essential for moi (or if your creatively inclined) - regardless it's an extremely useful design tool and photo editor with a desktop counterpart to compliment it. In summary, it's professionally developed and presented to a high level and thus comes highly recommended!

Great app.for the money, go to YouTube for info on iPad version, otherwise you will flounder. Have a look at my composites here:- Flickr.com/mowngorilla.

Waste of time (2.3)
13/11/2016 14:39:00 1/5 By shemsureshot
The instructions in this app are completely useless due to lacking an detail. A simple thing like copying and pasting a selection is a monumental task due to the app making no sense. You just end up feeling the developers have projected there own incompetence to the user. I have used apps like this for years and I am completely baffled by this one. If they want to be different from everything else that's fine but at least try to explain how to do things properly.

Several excellent features but needs further development. (2.3)
10/11/2016 17:07:00 5/5 By Polyzoan
The repair feature is excellent however, some of the effects are a bit gimmicky e.g. Kaleidoscope and the templates to download are pointless. This app also has issues with Raw files. The UI is also very poor and clunky. Some features such as the Vignette just so basic, resolution is lost on application. This app needs additional features such as perspective as one reviewer has suggested. Good to have layering, what about blending ? However, this is a true photo editing app, whose functionality is only limited by your own limitations so it deserves 5 stars.

Won't open NEF files properly (2.3)
28/10/2016 03:28:00 2/5 By Al5667
I purchased this so I could edit my imported Nikon Raw files without having to fire up my laptop. Imagine when I found it only opens what looks like the thumbnail for the file. Searching online I found that this has been brought up on the support forum and nothing has been done about it. App is useless to me without proper Raw support.

Excellent App. (2.3)
26/10/2016 18:33:00 5/5 By Neshiah.
I use the desk top version of this app and was overjoyed to learn of both an iPad and iPhone version. I am not disappointed. Extremely versatile App. Recommended.

Several good feature but - (2.3)
25/09/2016 13:10:00 3/5 By Polyzoan
The repair feature is second to none and is better than that of Adobe Fix. However, some of the effects are a bit gimmicky e.g. Kaleidoscope and utterly pointless. The UI is also very poor and clunky. Needs additional features such as distortion and perspective as one reviewer has suggested

Limited functionality (2.3)
24/09/2016 17:50:00 3/5 By 36hho
Bought the app thinking it would have basic functions like the ability to distort and add perspective to layers, unfortunately it doesn't support such functions which I found very disappointing. Waste of money

Easy to use and does what you want. (2.3)
06/08/2016 12:12:00 5/5 By Hell's Kittn
My go-to app for making posters for Facebook. :-)

AMAZING GREAT FOR DESIGNERS (2.3)
27/07/2016 01:54:00 5/5 By MsM JinX
I recommend for anyone who designs! So much like photos shop easy to use! I hope we see insane updates in the future!!

amazing! (2.2.1)
27/06/2016 12:48:00 5/5 By rapunzel66gold
I've found the holy grail, lol ... I was desperately trying to distort something for an art ref, having come back to art, and, with not liking PS, was overjoyed to discover Pixelmator! The biggest ever thank you ... to be able to freely distort, AND tidy it up/lots of smudge brushes/great zoom! ... that's me sorted then, lol. So easy to use, and beautifully designed. First ref pic is done, and I can't wait to draw it, thanks to you! A++++++++

Best Photo Editing App #1 (2.2.1)
17/06/2016 02:00:00 5/5 By Ted21117
This is by far the best photo editing app I've seen to date! Dealing with layers, blending, erasing etc is so so simple and flawless!!!

It does cut-outs (2.2.1)
11/06/2016 22:09:00 5/5 By Nickyje
I purchased the app because it was an editors' choice and because the reviews were very good. I was not disappointed. I am a textiles degree student and what I had hoped for is that it would do cut-outs to reveal a patterned layers underneath - so pleased to find that it does what I want! Also it is extremely easy to use. Ok, it doesn't have the functionality of all of the drawing/painting apps, but that's not the point. It has wonderful special effects too - distortion, stretch etc. A designer's dream.

Great integration with Photos (2.2.1)
11/06/2016 17:24:00 5/5 By trenchantly
Well made and easy to use.

Great app (2.2.1)
03/06/2016 19:41:00 5/5 By _ZBR
Great app, worth the cost, the Photoshop of ios. 10/10

Some terrific features but ! (2.2.1)
01/05/2016 00:42:00 5/5 By Polyzoan
Some terrific features, the repair feature is the best on IOS. Other features are simply a gimmick. However, please be advised that the iCloud Drive issue which makes photos automatically open in Pixelmator in IOS 9.0 and 9.1 prevails again in IOS 9.3. Please sort this for you cannot view an image on iCloud Drive for it to open on Pixelmator.

Best Photoshop-like app ever (2.2.1)
12/03/2016 14:02:00 5/5 By Claudio Coletta C.
One of the best apps for photo editing. Filled with several options for drawing and it's perfect to combine photos. Totally worth it.

Just what I needed (2.2.1)
12/01/2016 19:01:00 5/5 By PhilW222
My main use for this type of image editing program is to polish my 3d renders and this delivers all the tools I needed to do a quality job. Easy to use toolset with good heal, clone and distort tools, plus layers and image adjustments a plenty, and some effects should they be needed. For the price it is amazing!

Best mobile Proffessional Pic Editing App, End of!!! (2.2.1)
10/01/2016 09:10:00 5/5 By TheBikeRider
This app is the best All in one image editor! It has pretty much all the powerful features of the full Mac version. Love the iCloud continuity feature and after about 15mins I was familiar with where all the features where and I was brushing and changing backgrounds like a boss. Worth every penny.

Great App (2.2.1)
10/01/2016 00:56:00 5/5 By AdvisingYou
Very good photo editing app, one of the best out there, please add more light leaks, bokehs, filters and allow for photos to export to a pixelmator album in photos. I would also like to see a better lasso/selection capabilities and clone tool similar to the way photoshop one works. Overall very good application recommended for anyone looking to enhance their photos.

Very much worth it's price (2.2.1)
22/12/2015 17:20:00 5/5 By C0ventryclare
Having been a graphic artist for most of my working life I have been looking for something to give me the flexibility on my mobile that I have been used to on my desktop and laptop devices. On those devices I use the professional version of a very common piece of photo-editing software so it was a big ask for an app. Now I have discovered Pixelmator I am happy to be able to say that it is the most flexible, precise and functional photo-editing app I've ever used on my iPad and iPhone. Before buying this app I had tried quite a lot of mobile apps (including ones I have paid up to and around the £10 mark) that purported to make advanced photo editing possible but I discovered that I needed more out of them than they could offer. I can now do many things that I would previously had to use my laptop for but with the convenience of editing them wherever I am with my phone. I'm not suggesting that it's a suitable replacement for the professional software available for desktop and laptop devices but in situations where there is no access to those devices this is a powerful little app. It may take a while to get used to using it but that's because there are so many things it can do, however, if you're used to photo-editing it's pretty instinctive.

Great new feature (2.2.1)
18/12/2015 19:13:00 4/5 By Dave 123456
Like opening and replacing back to photos, but why are there only limited tools if I edit directly from Photos?

Shocking. (2.2)
11/12/2015 14:14:00 1/5 By brjaiqns
I don't get it. Waste of £4 - don't buy it. FaceTune and Afterlight are so much better!! Seriously annoyed at paying £4 for something that doesn't even work properly.
