By Apple (iTunes S.a.r.l.)

Swift Playgrounds is a revolutionary app for iPad that makes it fun to learn and experiment with code.  You solve interactive puzzles in the guided “Learn to Code” lessons to master the basics of coding, while additional challenges let you explore code and create programs that are engaging and unique.

Swift Playgrounds requires no coding knowledge, so it’s perfect for students just starting out, from twelve to one-hundred-and-twelve. The whole time you are learning Swift, a powerful programming language created by Apple and used by professionals to build many of today’s most popular apps. And because it’s built to take full advantage of iPad and the real iOS SDK, Swift Playgrounds is a first-of-its-kind learning experience.

Lessons built-in
• Apple-created lessons guide you through the core concepts of programming by using code to solve puzzles
• See your code run in a beautiful, interactive 3D world that you can rotate with a finger and pinch to zoom
• Animations introduce each new coding concept at a high level before you dive into the puzzles
• Choose from three animated characters to carry out the steps of your code
• Glossary covers a comprehensive list of common terms, or tap a word in the instructions for additional help

Explore and create
• Challenges encourage experimentation and creativity by playing with game logic, music, and various other themes
• New challenges are released regularly to keep improving your emerging coding skills
• Interactive coding shows the results of your code instantly, either beside the text or acted out in the live view
• Step through your code to highlight each line as it is run
• Use your own photos, images, sounds, and files within a program to make it uniquely yours
• Templates are a head start to create your own programs that use graphs, graphics, touch, or a chat with the computer
• Create your own playgrounds from scratch to take your coding skills to entirely new places
• Reset any page to start over, or duplicate and rename any document to give a family member their own copy

Built for touch
• Quick Type suggestions for code are so smart you can write entire programs in just a few taps, no keyboard required
• Tap and hold to grab any command and move it around to change the order of your code
• Drag a brace with your finger to wrap a block of code inside a loop or conditional statement
• Drag and drop snippets of commonly-used code directly into your playground
• Tap a number or color in your code to display a pop-up in which to enter a new value or choose from a color picker
• Amazing new coding keyboard has all the common Swift characters, just swipe to pick the alternate symbol on any key

Real Swift and iOS code
• Learn the same powerful Swift programming language used by the pros to create thousands of apps in the App Store
• Access iOS frameworks such as SpriteKit for 2D games, SceneKit for 3D graphics, UIKit, and more
• Your code has direct control of iPad hardware such as the gyroscope, accelerometer, camera, and touch events
• Use Bluetooth APIs to write programs that control robots and other real-world devices with your iPad
• Every concept and skill you learn directly applies when writing real apps

Share
• Send your creations to friends and family using Messages, Mail, AirDrop, or other Share Sheet extensions
• Record a video of yourself coding or running your creation, complete with your own voice narration
• Broadcast a coding session live to the world using any streaming service app that supports ReplayKit
• Homework hand-in with iTunes U makes it easy to bring coding into the classroom
• Turn on iCloud Drive to enable Xcode on your Mac to edit and extend the same documents that are on your iPad

Swift Playgrounds requires a 64-bit iPad with iOS 10 or later, including iPad mini 2 or later, iPad Air or later, or iPad Pro

Comments and Ratings for Swift Playgrounds

Enjoyable (1.5)

Never new learning to code was fun . Using on iPad 12.9 , needs polishing, can act wrong at times , could just be iPad Pro ain't t got enough memory to cope ?. But on the whole , very good .

Great introduction to coding app with lots of potential but... (1.2)

Really great app for learning code but advances through concepts way too quickly. Needs more practice of each concept for learners to become fluent. Some of the hints are good in that it doesn't give the answer to the problem immediately, instead it feeds you a little bit of information and if you can solve the problem from that point then great if not you can get another hint. For some of the hints the final solution is displayed and this is essential if you are stuck, you need someone to tell you the answer. Unfortunately not all the lessons have a solution, this is incredibly frustrating as then you have to turn to YouTube to find a solution and while some of the solutions on YouTube are good some are very poor. If you make an error in the code a orange dot appear to let you know you have made a mistake unfortunately none of the solution to 'fix' the error generated by the app have helped? You can make you code run at three different speeds as you test it out which is great for longer puzzles when you are debugging. There is also a feature for stepping through your code whilst debugging. This is very helpful. It's looks are also not to childish, so adult learners should be happy to learn to code with the app to. On the whole a great app for learning to code. Could do with concepts being introduced slower with more opportunities for practice each concept and combinations of concepts. Providing the best solution to every puzzle is essential to avoid learners getting stuck and giving up. Will eagerly await the next evolution of Swift Playgrounds ☺️

Wow, great! (1.2)

I am actually learning to code, after years of failure due to lack of motivation. This App makes it accessible and fun. It's amazing, very well paced, and I love it. I'm finally using my iPad Pro for something productive - not just games!

Byte's world doesn't work! (1.1.2)

Learn to Code 1 and 2 and Hour of Code won't work! Also, when I bring up the images section in the Snippets Library several times, the app crashes! Please fix!

Literally Useless (1.1.2)
02/03/2017 05:22:09 1/5 By Colesmeister
I found this nothing but completely frustrating. Don't really understand the silly game element. Made it through level after level yet still had to use hints and skip levels as it was obvious I had learned no code. Deleted before I destroy my ipad

Amazing App (1.1.2)
11/01/2017 19:36:20 5/5 By Lawtony1
This app is amazing. I feel like it has taught the basics of Swift very well. Still very early into the app, currently looking at loops, but i would recommend this to anyone looking into coding. Although i study Computer Science, and therefore spend time coding with Java, I've preferred learning Swift through playground than I've been learning java.

Won't run the code (1.1.2)

Previous version worked no problem but since the update I'm having issues with getting the code to run

Junk on IPad (1.1.2)
15/12/2016 12:46:00 1/5 By Motobiman
The word processor on this is absolute junk on an IPad. Written by people who now nothing about teaching at all. Shame there is no zero star rating. Avoid.

Great app for people learning how to code (1.1.1)
24/11/2016 15:19:03 5/5 By Oma baba
I've had no prior knowledge to coding but this app has been really great for teaching me how to. If you're just learning how to code then I recommend this app to anyone. Apple actually deserves credit for making this even though they're tax evaders.
