By Karsten Bruns

External Editors For Photos adds an extension to the OS X Photos application that allows you to edit your photos with any image editor on your Mac. To see how it works watch the screencast on my website.

- Edited images are saved back to Photos immediately and your original photos are updated in place.
- All metadata will be preserved.
- Open your imported RAW files with your favorite RAW-Converter and replace it with your edited version.
- No data lost: You can always revert back to your original files.
- Works even in your book-projects.
- Edited Photos will sync across all your devices.

- To use the extension find a picture in Photos and double-click
- Click the Edit button in the upper right window corner
- Select the Extensions from the icon bar on the right.

- Pressing Enter in the photo overview is a shortcut to switch directly into Photos edit mode.
- Also, you can paste or drag any image into the picture frame within the extension.

Have Fun!

Comments and Ratings for External Editors For Photos

Outstanding (1.1)

This isn’t just a ‘good app’ - at 99p this is a public service; an act of humanitarianism. I still won’t let go of my old, OSX-compatible Snapseed and was eyeing up new £30-£70 packages to replace it. No need! This and many more apps now work in Photos, exactly as they should. Bravo!

What I’ve been waiting for... (1.1)

As mentioned by other reviewers, this is a feature available in iPhoto that should have been in Photos from day one. It installed without any problems and does exactly was it says. I can choose from a list of any photo editors I have loaded on my Mac, or I can add select a favourite that will load everytime. A brilliant little program and well worth the 0.99p!

Fantastic! (1.1)

This app allows me to easily overlay VSCO edits to the original photo. At last, no duplicates! Fantasic app.

Can’t get to work with PE12 (1.1)

I also can’t get this to save edited images using Photoshop Elements 12, but it works excatly as shown using MarkUp but of course this offers very little editing options. I have been through all the Preferences for PE12 and I can\t see any setting that would help fix this. A shame as it’s a really neat solution if Apple simply aren’t going to allow an exteral editor in Photos as they used to in iPhoto.

Makes Photos better to use (1.1)

Came across this by accident- having expresed concern that Photos lacked iPhotos functionality of specifying Photoshop (or similar) as default picture editor. Whilst not quite as good as iPhoto’s double click on the photo and it's open in Photoshop, it is pretty good - and enough to dissuade me from buying (or renting) Lightroom. Pity that Apple didn’t make this as part of the Photos package.

Simple and brilliant (1.1)

Just tried this out on Sierra with Pixelmator and it worked like a dream first time. Not much else to say - it did exactly what it says it will do. Great work Karsten. :-)

What Apple should have done out of the box (1.1)

Well this little utility is awesome! I can now use my Nik Software Plugins inside Apple Photos! Very well done Dev!

Great that someone has developed this, and for only 79p… fantastic. A feature Photos should really have out of the box! Easy to use, does what it says very well.

So Simple, So Great, So Thanks! (1.1)

Something that should have been implemented by Apple. Great credit to the developer for spotting the need. It works perfectly for me - able to open GIMP for those images which need a little more editing. Save the file and it overwrites the file in Apple’s photo library - perfect! No opening GIMP, exporting and then importing again. Hours saved. For .75p. Can’t I pay more??

Thank you (1.1)

Very neat and useful app that lets you alter a photo with another application, like, say, Gimp, direct from Photos without having to export, faffle about and then reimport. Developer very helpful as well. He answered a query I had in less than a day.

From this dev.
