Release Notes

31/03/2017 | Version : 1.3 | Size : 14.6 MB
iStudio Publisher 1.3 contains many new features, improvements and fixes – our largest update ever! Here are some of the highlights:

• Comprehensive hyperlink support
Link text and shapes to web pages, email addresses, internal pages, files and custom URLs. Visualise and test links in iStudio Publisher. Use internal links to create a document contents page that links to different sections. Links are embedded in exported PDFs.

• Page/spread reordering and duplication
Complete control over adding, removing, duplicating and reordering the pages/spreads in your document, with full undo/redo.

• Separate Thumbnails window
Navigate around documents with ease. Adjust window size/zoom to view your whole document. Drag to duplicate or reorder pages/spreads. Window remembers its size, position and zoom.

• Contextual menus
All your favourite actions in one handy place, and some new ones. A much-requested productivity booster. Typically available using control-click, right-click or two-finger tap (for trackpads) on the document window.

• Font support upgraded
Font interaction is much better organised and presented, and it's faster. Font faces in each family are clearly grouped together, and the total number of available faces is shown. We also added a Recent Fonts list, which grows as you open existing documents and whenever you apply fonts. It's available from the main menu, the contextual menus and the inspectors, and it resets when iStudio Publisher launches.

• Notifications added for unavailable bold/italic font variants
We don't synthesise fonts as it's not good practise. If you need a bold or italic font variant, it has to be installed. If it isn't, the app now warns you when you try to set it.

• Many organisational settings persist between restarts
Document window size/position, shape library state, rulers, inspector panel size and position, open inspectors, Thumbnails window size/position/zoom, and most view settings (including snap and grid).

• Inserted images are scaled within the page size, instead of original size
Applies regardless of how you insert images: copy/paste, drag/drop, insert menu, or Image Inspector. Previously, large images could extend well beyond the page boundaries, making them tricky to resize. Now the size of the image's containing shape is capped at 80% of the page dimensions, and the image's fit mode is set to "Fit - no Stretch".

• Speed and accuracy of inset, outset, and runaround calculations
Shapes with non-trivial boundary lines perform noticeably faster when you adjust their inset and outset distances. The generation of the inset and outset paths is much improved. Now when you enable text outset, you get smooth rounded corners instead of sharp vertices.

• A range of measures to manage large files
You're notified if a file is growing large, or can’t be saved due to insufficient file system space.
Document file size is shown on the document window title bar.

• Document window tabs (macOS Sierra only)
Open multiple documents in one window, each with its own tab.

• Blinking cursor

• Drag and drop content from another app now centers the content on the drop point

• Flow linking appends any existing downstream text
Linking two text containers together concatenates any flow that they may already contain, appending the downstream text. (NOTE: only if the downstream container doesn't already have text flowing into it from another source).

• Pasting shapes onto a different page or document doesn’t offset the first paste
A productivity booster. The app remembers how many times you've pasted onto each page, and calculates successive offsets accordingly. This makes it very quick to paste items in the same place onto multiple pages.

• Overhaul of tooltips for the whole UI
We've added more tooltips, improved existing tooltips, and included keyboard shortcuts where appropriate.

For a full list of the new features, improvements and fixes, see the Release Notes in the iStudio Publisher’s help pages.

Comments and Ratings for iStudio Publisher

Good. Basic & in dyer need of an update... (1.2.1)
03/12/2016 13:17:00 3/5 By Danthemanuk27
iStudio has all the features but comparing them to how easy things are now, simple tasks such as importing a picture, cropping and re-sizing prove to be extremely difficult, and I find myself constantly watching videos trying to figure out what to do. A new version surely would help iron out these problems to make it a great app.

Great value and it allows spreads (1.2.1)
08/11/2016 18:50:00 5/5 By JohnT @ Emsworth
I switched to iStudio and have not regretted the change. It offers many options and in particuilare 2 page spreads. And all for the same price as other software upgrade cost. I am told the next major version will be a free upgrade so an added bonus. An excellent product at a very sensible price.

Great Support (1.2.1)
04/10/2016 12:48:00 5/5 By Nowhitesox
The video tutorials are excellent - the help pages are clear. I contacted support re text wrap around irregular objects and the solution was there the next morning. I responded with a hyperlink query and the reply was with me half an hour later (they will be available shortly in an upgrade). And, at last, software that manages booklet printing, bleeds and crop marks for me. Very impressive for the price.

Superb support (1.2.1)
02/08/2016 23:11:00 5/5 By Greatgame9999999
I have been using iStudio for a few month and have years of eperience with Microsft Publisher so did not read the training material in detail. This Saturday I had an issue I could not resolve so I e-mailed support, Sunday morning I had a very friendly and more to the point helpful response. I responded to thank the helpdesk as they had resolved my issue at the first attempt advising them which of the suggested resolutions resolved my problem, this mail also received a swift response with extremely detailed instructions on how to use the facilities I was having issues with, superb support both in terms of speed of response and level of detail provided, a sure sign of a quality supplier.

Highly Recommend this app (1.2.1)
18/06/2016 18:49:00 5/5 By Devafilms
I highly Recommend this app. It’s so simple to use offering you, ready made, well designed pages that you can dispense with as soon as you are able to get stuck in to designing your own uniquely designed pages. I needed to put hyperlinks on my page, so I got in touch with the helpline and Andy immediately responded. Apparently they are about to release an update that will enable us to put working hyperlinks into our pages. However for now, he advised me to set up the hyperlink in iStudio Publisher and then activate the link with PDF Assistant Pro. Such a great idea, that works well. Both these programmes are so affordable. Also with iStudio Publisher they have made it possible for us to export PDF with different dpi’s - so that we can reduce the files in size. I highly recommend this app!

First class software with premium support (1.2.1)
02/06/2016 15:20:00 5/5 By Tazoo2
After trying a couple of apps which came near to having the features I needed I found iStudio Publisher, which does what I want - and a great deal more. I can’t believe such sophisticated software is so cheap! Add to this the superb support from the developer, who is always ready to answer questions and offer work-arounds and tips. I would actually like to give it more than 5 stars.

Very good software easy to navigate very Happy!!!!! (1.2.1)

Was looking for a software to use to create Logo for business venture and this is exactly what i required its easy to use and provides all the necessary tutorial to get you going on their web site, the best way to use this would be to find a template online or simply see something you like and design your own version. Took me a couple of hours to design a personal leaflets all i need is to throw in some images and write in the text and just print. You can open more windows when doing multiple applications so when your working with the colour fill you can apply same colour to all the applications at any time its brilliant for just £12.99 I recommend any small business enterprice to invest in this software you will not regret it. Also i do not generally leave a review but these guys deserve it well done.

Excellent ! (1.2.1)
12/01/2016 13:47:00 5/5 By Delpahn10988
I was left with a short timescale to produce a brochure as I had been let down by our media agency. I have very little skill in this area although I am pretty good with Powerpoint. Not only is it extreamly easy to use the results were (I Think!) very professional looking and I got very positive feedback from our client. To top it all I had a query on how one of the functions works and I got a full reply within 12 hours. For the price this is brilliant and I couldnt recommend it more highly.

This is a fantastic app for the money and very simple to use. You don't have to create complex documents for it to be useful - we've found it invaluable for 'quick' jobs where we just want to knock something together and print it, like labels, door hangers, notes (a note from the tooth fairy is a good one). My kids use it for their school work, and just about anything they want to quickly lay out and print. They are really keen on tracing at the moment, so they just drag a few images in from web pages, arrange them on a page and print them out ready for tracing. Takes about 1 minute. We've had the desktop version for a while, and so far we've also used it for loads of things like creating music manuscript, coloured lined writing paper, reward charts for the kids ('star' charts for them to tick off), flyers for our community, school notices…the list goes on. We'd find it hard to do without it now, and I can thoroughly recommend it. *** Update **** After several years of using this app, I still find I frequently depend on it. I’m not sure what they did when they designed it, but it seems really easy to put stuff where you want it on a page. They clearly got something right.

Excellent desktop publishing software (0)

Having volunteered for the task of editing a 44 page magazine I was advised to use a well known professional design package- but it was far too complex for me. I saw some good reviews of iStudio Publisher and decided to give it a go on my Macbook Air. I spent some time watching the short video tutorials ( part of the package) and practicing the techniques after each one. As I grew more confident and familiar with the software I decided to design a travel journal based on my last holiday and was very pleased with the result. After that it was time to get down to the job in hand- the magazine. It has just been a matter of organising my material into two page spreads and after each one was completed I found that I was getting a little faster and adept with the many tools iStudio Publisher has to offer- not so many that you become bamboozled but certainly enough to create a visually attractive magazine. I bought a large 27 inch screen and this has helped a lot- it’s difficult to do design work on a small screen no matter what software you use. I have already sent the magazine front and back covers to the printer as PDF files and he said they look perfect. I have also sent the magazine out to various people for proof reading and one of them phoned me yesterday to say he thought it was “excellent”. The support from iStudio Publisher has been the best I have ever experienced from any software or hardware company. I have had rapid, personalised replies to all my queries- not that there have been many because the online help pages provide masses of information. I rarely give five stars for any kind of review but on this occasion I just had to.

A bit slow but seems to work well (1.2)
02/08/2015 13:19:00 4/5 By ugugugugugugug
I've used Adobe InDesign (and before that Pagemaker) for many years at a 'medium' level of sophistication. I'm looking for something to replace InDesign (and Illustrator) as I don't use it frequently enough to pay the new monthly rental fees (and because my current versions run on Mac OS 10.6.8 but not on later versions of Mac OS 10). I have just re-created a two page InDesign file involving text and eps files. iStudio is a bit slow, especially when one adjusts the paragraph settings. Also, the text wrap facility gave me a bit of a runaround (sic), in that I couldn't get the 'bounding box' option to work. However, some things are nice (eg the arrow keys for incrementally changing the position of an object - and which are absent from another application that I'm trialling, Swift Publisher 3). So, on the basis of this one test, which took about one hour, iStudio version 1.2 didn't crash and looks to be very good value and a viable alternative to InDesign for relatively straightforward page setting work.

Its very good (1.1.9)
04/05/2015 10:56:00 4/5 By Polyzoan
An update is imminent which will make this App even better than it already is to use. I am a complete novice but have found this App very intuitive to use, and have produced good results with it. Just put a bit of effort in and you will reap the rewards.

WTF (1.1.9)
20/04/2015 01:15:00 1/5 By 1lambo
Not for the novice. Am i the only one that finds this so hard to get started???? So frustrating!!!! Waste of time and money.

Easy to learn and pretty powerful (1.1.9)
20/03/2015 18:12:00 5/5 By j33per
I downloaded iStudio to help me produce large posters and flyers. It didn’t take long at all to come to grips with how iStudio works and their documentation is also quite good. I would recommend this product wholeheartedly especially since it represents outstanding value for money.

Fedup with it crashing (1.1.9)
30/01/2015 19:44:00 1/5 By Kingthing001
This used to be good for all the designing I needed, but lately it just crashes if you want to do anything more complicated than business cards or flyers, its great at loosing files and just isnt worth it anymore. Used to be great, possibly the bugs and crashing is happening because of the Yosemite update, I dont know.

very good value (1.1.9)
24/09/2014 22:12:00 5/5 By Very Hacked Off
Having been using this for a while I have not encountered any problems and found it to be very good. I do my newsletter very easily and found it very easy to use. A very good basic publishing program for anyone wanting to start publishing their own work. Highly recommended.

Good product, but annoying (1.1.9)
22/03/2014 14:49:00 3/5 By vkaria
This software is really good, I use it as an alterative to indesign to create posters for my degree and the online tutorials are so useful for quickly learning it. HOWEVER, I think that its in desperate need of an update!!!! It randomly crashes every now and then and doesnt save work and freezes my entire macbook!!!!!! Sometimes it just freezes when I open it for a new document! It is so frustrating and makes me want to not use what could be an amazing product!

Great Product; great support (1.1.9)
18/03/2014 18:03:00 5/5 By androoooooo
Like many good apps, it takes a bit of learning but with the comprehensive documents, how-to videos and outstanding service from their support guy, I’ve got to grips with it pretty quickly and I find the product to be excellent and good value-for-money. Recommended.

Awesome Customer Service & Product (1.1.9)
17/01/2014 12:04:00 5/5 By D Duckett
After only using the iStudio for less than an hour, I noticed an issue with it not recognising one of the fonts installed on my Mac. It’s an essential font as it makes up the logo for my company so I needed to have it work. I emailed customer support and Andy Carrott got back in touch very promptly. He asked me to send a copy of the font for testing and the same day he replied and said that they’d had the same issue, but that a future update should take care of the problem. However, it didn’t end there because he did research to find a nearly identical font (only difference is the new one registeres a little smaller) and send me the info on where to find it. For the £13 price tag, this level of service was exceptional and I doubt you’d get it with many other companies. Based on this experience alone, they’ve got a loyal customer and I look forward to using the product.

Just what I wanted! (1.1.9)
08/12/2013 22:15:00 5/5 By mad moggies
Downloaded iStudio Publisher earlier today and have been trying it out. It’s amazingly good value and so far seems to compare well with the old version of InDesign I used till it became incompatible with recent versions of Mac OSX and upgrading was prohibitive. I’d been doing the best I could with Pages but found it very limited and therefore frustrating to use, especially as I like to design my own layouts. Very easy to work out what to do in this app and if it’s not obvious then it’s easy to find out using ‘Help’. Excellent!

Essential features of publishing tool are missing (1.1.9)
24/11/2013 13:53:00 1/5 By michael3.14159
After years of using InDesing I was looking for an alternative for personal use. If you are looking for a publishing tool DON’T buy this. Essential features are missing: - no bleed area - NO GUIDES!!! - NO GRID SYSTEMS!!! I seriously haven't thought that features like that will not be there! Hope they will be added soon, because the app is otherwise nice. (Open-source apps like Scribus have these basic features)

Dump PAGES and nurture this baby instead…. (1.1.9)
11/11/2013 11:51:00 5/5 By Southpaw79
I have a professional design background, weaned on Quark Xpress and Indesign. However since retiring from my job as art editor for a major financial UK broadsheet I still have the need for a DTP package for the various design jobs I still get asked to do from time to time. Up until now - with a bit of tweaking - Apple’s PAGES has provided sufficient flexibility to achieve good results. However their current version 5.0 has left the end users stunned by it’s inability to create ‘facing pages’ and link text boxes to enable copy flow, essential if you’re trying to create anything other than a ‘Lost Dog or Cat’ A4 flyer!! My search for an affordable DTP substitute led me to the iStudio Publisher App. and boy am I pleased with it. It’s everything that PAGES should have been - and more, I cannot praise it enough. Then there’s the price, £12.99 in the UK - I would estimate it to be worth five times that! Then there’s the customer support. I had a personal response to a query within 24 hours - you wouldn’t get that from Cupertino now would you? Their website offers you a 30 day trial, but I’d made my mind up after 30 minutes, it’s simply a brilliant piece of software, and can’t see how anyone could be disappointed.

good idea poorly executed (1.1.9)
08/10/2013 19:26:00 2/5 By D1sc0
The interface is clean and simple to get to grips with straight away. It's a really simple, yet pretty powerful tool that can be understood from the word go - but it has some big problems. Firstly, it seems quite buggy. I've been using it for a day and it's crashed a few times, plus elements and text that I've placed or changed now seem uneditable for no apparent reason. Worst of all it's really slow - I mean frustratingly, painfully slow. It can't even keep up with text as you type, so you have to wait an age for the typing to catch up with you - and I'm using an 8 core Xeon Mac Pro with 32 gig of ram, so don't blame the hardware! In all, a great idea and would be worth the money if they could make the functionailty deliver on it's promises.

great developer (1.1.9)

This application is fantastic.. Realy simple to use - The templates are a good touch - more of them would be great. If your looking to create some bussiness cards, leaflets, flyers, letterheads, compy branding, posters etc... then this tool is perfect. Nice and simple to use and the simplified controls and menus make it easy to create some excellent looking layouts. Exporting straight out as PDF is great (some more export options here would be nice) :-) Good job..
