Comments and Ratings for iThoughtsX (mindmap)

My favorite mind mapping tool (4.11)
25/05/2017 05:39:08 5/5 By code_monkey_70
I’ve tried numerous mind mapping tools in the past and they have all fallen short some how - to bloated, to slow, quirky keys and just plain ugly. iThoughts treads the find line, it’s a small application that works well by providing enough features in a simple way that make working with the application straightforward and simple. It offers a range of features that I find myself growing into - project planning and tracking an example - and it does so in a way that offers the user flexibility to make their mind map pretty in a way that works for the topic that is being mapped. I find it especially useful that there is such good integration between the desktop version and the iPad/iPhone version since it enables me to make changes and capture my thoughts whenever and where ever they occur.

Frustrating to use for anyhing but the absolute basics (4.11)

Every time I try and use this I end up spending more time fighting the software than making a mindmap. For example - you create a child item that relates to two potential parents. A child can only have one parent, so the other has to be set as a “relationship”. Then the auto-layout decides it’s just going to sit this behind another item. Why can auto-layout have items sat directly on top of others? So then you spend a while fighting the layout. It’s just frustrating.

A truly fantastic mind-mapping tool (4.3)

Probably my favourite Mac app at the moment. - Love the rollup task progression completion (it calculates it logically and you can even hover over the progress icon to see the exact percentage of sub-tasks completion) - Love the simple drag up and down of notes. Works great on the Mac and iPad version. - Love the brick wall background (the simple things in life are nice) - Particularly love the ability to add multiple layouts into a single document The developer is proactive in both pushing out new updates and responding questions if you contact him.

Lots of improvements (4.3)

Adding Markdown is very good. Very stable app. Being able to link to other maps is great. I use it a lot.

I cannot give it enough praise (3.12)

I first started using the iPad version in 2011 for small docs and meeting minutes. It is actually easier to use than writing notes in a word editor in, say, a mail. Many years later I have advanced to writing 200 odd page requirements document using the mac OS version as my basis. Uploading from Excel, massaging the data into correct structures. Colour coding and adding names for questions, autonumbernig and then the final export to a Microsoft document for publishing. The good thing is that I only have to do that final step right at the end because the Ithoughts allows me to print the detail in less mind numbing formats for review. So people are used to reviewing my thoughts in this format. I think it is a nice piece of software and well thought out and usable at many level.

Best mindmapping software out there (3.11)

I’ve been using this for years on iOS and finally bought the mac version too. It feels like a lot of money but it’s worth every penny. I start every new significant task with a mind map (I’m a software engineer) and this is perfect for it. Definitely buy this, but be prepared to invest a little time in order to get the most out of it. It’s very fast and intuitive once you get the hang of it. Two quick tips - triple space at the end of a topic to create a child and triple return to start a new sibling. alt+F2 to edit the currently selected topic.

superb app, amazing developer (3.10)

ithoughts is the app I rely on every day for writing, planning, and even making websites. has always been amazing and somehow with every update the developer makes it even better — must buy!

Phenomenal mind-mapping tool (3.8)
24/02/2016 16:16:00 5/5 By GeoKen
If you’re the kind of person who thinks visually and organises their thoughts iteratively, reorganising as you go, then mindmapping could well be for you. And after trying at least a dozen tools on the Mac (including cross-platform and web-based ones) this is by far the easiest to use and most powerful, with fantastic exporting options and new/refined features coming on a regular basis. Expensive? I must spend two hours a day using this and my productivity and creativity would probably halve without it, so I say not expensive at all!

Open Mind Mapping (3.5)

I love this product, and its iOS counterparts. Very powerful export capabilities, and the support for Markdown means I can create structured documents in a mind map. Reasonably priced for the functionality and just what I have been looking for.

Best in class, quality, well thought out application (3.3)

I've been mindmapping for years now and have tried many different mapping tools for OSX; this is the first one that I would actually recommend as being good. All of the others have been broken in oneway or another (Xmind, Freemind, Simplemind, Novamind to list just a few of them) and to finally find this one has been like a breath of fresh Yorkshire air ... thank you toketaware Main upsides 1) Fully native, so fast, doesn't look it's been beaten with the ugly stick and can be made to work well with Dragon speech recognition (brainstorming with speech recognition == win) 2) It's got just enought features that it'll do everything I want and a bit more besides, but it isn't completely overwhelming and has sensible keyboard short cuts. 3) iCloud/Dropbox sync and similarly capable app on IOS for the ipad. 4) Support for other mindmap file types, over the years I've accumlated quite a few of these. Downside: 1) Cost, but then there are worse for more and you can get a 14 day trial off the developer's website if you would like to try before buying. 2) Haven't found anything else yet ...

From this dev.
