Release Notes

31/03/2017 | Version : 8.1.4 | Size : 199.8 MB
Issue syncing with CloudTree fixed
Issue merging persons in a family tree fixed
Touch Bar integration using the Interactive Tree improved

20/01/2017 | Version : 8.1.3 | Size : 199.8 MB
MacFamilyTree 8.1 comes with the brand new CloudTree feature - it is now possible for the first time to work on the same family tree with any number of users and in real time. All changes to your tree will be transferred and available to all other users invited by you within a few seconds. CloudTree operates in compliance with the highest privacy standards and relies on Apple's iCloud infrastructure.

CloudTree Sync

CloudTree syncs only changes. Sounds like a no-brainer to you? Well, it isn’t. The old iCloud sync always needed to transfer your complete family tree file. If you change just one person’s birthday, the whole file had to be uploaded and download again. With CloudTree Sync, only that single event has to be synchronized. This means faster sync than ever while consuming just very little bandwidth. Even sync via cellular network is no longer an issue.

CloudTree Share

Invite other iCloud users to work with them on the same family tree. All changes are synched within seconds and are available on all other devices. Just have a look at the change log if you want to know which entries changed and who contributed to your tree. There’s also a read-only mode if you like to show your tree to family members but don’t want them to edit anything.

Other improvements:

- Support for Touch Bar added, several contextual functions are directly accessible from the small display above the keyboard on the recently introduced MacBook Pro
- Improved place selection and management
- Better Web Site export performance
- Improved configuration of the Kinship report
- Timeline chart can now be filtered using Smart Filters
- Place list can now be sorted by state, county and country
- Many new Smart Filter options added

Fixes for Version 8.1.1:
- Problem displaying the Map Report fixed
- Rare crash issue fixed during syncing with CloudTree
- Touch Bar updating issue fixed

Fixes for Version 8.1.2:
- Rare issue fixed where CloudTree does not sync a specific entry type
- Fixed FamilySearch "Reject all Matches" button
- New LDS Temples added

Fixes for Version 8.1.3:
- Plausibility Check is now handling LDS events correctly
- Hourglass Chart in the Person Report can now be configured correctly
- Issues migrating databases from previous versions fixed
- Right-click in the Interactive Tree works reliably now
- Interactive Tree background colors fixed

Comments and Ratings for MacFamilyTree 8

An excellent program (8.1.3)
18/01/2017 08:54:00 4/5 By KiltedGreen
The radical difference in appearance between MFT and my previous genealogy application threw me for a while, just trying to work out where things were and how to use it. However, once I started actually using it, after imprting the GEDCOM file and media exported by my old software, rather than just exploring and playing I soon felt right at home. There are a few workflow issues such as should I link to media or source or both from a person (source I’m fairly sure) but there is little guidance in the program itself. Compared to my previous software, the manual for MFT falls rather short but that is my only gripe. The software is fast, reliable and looks totally at home on macOS Sierra. The new CloudTree sync works really quickly and flawlessly between my iMac and my iPad (my iPad touch sadly only runs iOS 9 and CloudTree sync doesn’t work with that). This means that now I really use my iPad to its best because it syncs in real time. Nice. I’m no pro genealogist, but MFT seems to have every report and listing and tree type under the sun! Certainly enough for me and the interactive tree lets you get a very functional view of a person in the whole chart. I’ve had a few queries and their support team has responded within a day or two which is great. Overall, MFT is clear, clean, fast, full-featured (as far as I can tell), has received regular updates from the developers, syncs beautifully with the cloud and does everything I need. Recommended.

Mac Family Tree 8.1.2 (8.1.2)

I have used Mac family tree for many years (think from version2), and also tried many alternative packages, but always come back to Mac family tree. I find it easy to use. Also when i have had issues or made suggestions the company make a prompt response and have even included one of my suggestions! all in all a very good package.

It must be good... (8.0.6)

I purchased this for my wife who is the real geneologist in the family. She had not used a computer based package like this before and started a little hesitantly. It didn’t help that I had already added some records collected from a web based site, and unfortunately she was quick to spot that the data was incorrect. Within days she had edited and corrected the imported Gedcom file, and moved data from one field to another. I’ve learnt to keep my head down at times like this and to leave her to get on with it. There were a couple of issues which Syniums’ help desk sorted out, very quickly, and within a day of asking. One issue was that we discovered children who had married at a very early age and that querying was done via a report which didn’t feel too intuitive. After about a week she said Mac FamilyTree 8 was very good and she was impressed! High praise indeed. To give you some idea of what she has done already, she has entered in almost 4000 individual records, and still going strong. Now she uses every time she is collecting data, and is an invaluable tool. Well worth giving it a try!

Great improvement on the best Mac fanily tree app (8.0.3)

Video Support (8.0.3)

Select video support under help and you are guided to a series of options that don’t have any video support. Please make your support feature user friendly. Thanks on behalf of many other users who are scratching heads and wondering, why does it have to be like that?

Not sure about this version as launched. Having used MFT since v2.x some years ago, I have seen the application very slowly develop in stages. This current version is, again, a step up from the previous one, but I would not rave about it too much from the roof tops. Undoubtably, it is probably the best genealogy application available on OS X, but it still falls short of expectations for the more serious genealogy researcher. The very basic system for citing sources has already been mentioned negatively, and I would add the awkwardly squashed up interface for adding certain types of data such as Occupation, Place of Residence etc., and worse still the very untidy and jumbled presentation of that data when printing out a report. These are areas that could very easily be tidied up without too much effort yet seem destined to be the poor relation. I was also very disappointed to find that after downloading the v8 OS X app that the iOS version is not available yet in the UK iTunes App store, and is only available to US iTunes store subscribers. This is despite receiving a promotional email from Synium encouraging me that both are available as a time limited offer. That is plainly NOT good enough!!! The only reason I have given 3 stars is because the application dose represent reasonable vale for the price asked and is relatively easy to use for the basic, main functions of listing people and relationships all within an attractively designed interface.

finally getting there! (8.0)

I’ve been working on and off with MacFamilyTree since about version 2. This latest version is finally seeing it develop into an excellent, and usable, product. Previous version were still good, but lacked some of the key tools really needed for serious genealogical research. This version seems to have addressed the majority of those items, all while maintaining the excellent graphic design and easy-to-use user interface. The only serious lack (as I see it) now is a robust system for citing sources. It does have one, but it is quite rudimentary, though the ability to rate the quality of sources is excellent. Hopefully an update in the near future will address this as well.

Awful. (8.0)

Worst interface I have found… I hate it.

Not as good as they would have you believe (8.0)

Having never used a Family Tree program before, I thought this would be a good introduction. On first appearance, it looked great. It’s easy enough to work out where to put data, it looks pretty and it’s clear and easy to understand. My issue was that at no point does it tell you that you will need to pay another subscription fee to Family Tree search engine sites. You can get some of them for free, if you’re based in the US or Canada, but being in the UK that doesn’t really help me a lot. The only two that could find records of my grandparents ewre ancestry.co.uk and findmypast.co.uk and they both wanted another subscription fee before giving up any information. The only way you can search for free is through Family Search in the App, which only seems to work through the website, meaning you then have to import it back into the App yourself. Also, it couldn’t find any of my relatives, despite being given place of birth, year and full name. As far as I’m concerned the main part of this App is not fit for purpose, it makes a lovely nice way to lay out your family tree, but if you don’t already have subscriptions to websites, then don’t expect to be able to search successfully for anything.

First impressions are not good. Does not give you the option to save changes when turning off. I’ve used MFT7 for a few years and MFT8 does not do things in a methodical way.

Decline in usability offsets functionality improvements (8.0)

This is the first release of version 8, so I have hopes for the future, but sadly this version suffers problems with the user interface which now needs more clicks to get anything done. This makes it very unwieldy for a large database. The interactive tree is not a clean as it used to be, reducing the ease of reading it. I believe that there are already plans to improve this. Change log and auto-login to FamilySearch are good additions.

Brilliant and so easy to use (8.0)
20/04/2016 16:55:00 5/5 By bmuppet
Having seen a demostration at the recent WDYTYA? Live show, today hasn’t come round quick enough! I’ve used numerous family tree programs over the years and for the Mac this is just brilliant. The interface is very responsive and to be able to float around your family tree is effortless. You can easily select your ‘root’ person and having the year of birth dates on each generational line really does give you that effect of ‘going back in time’. I have used Gedcom to upload 3000 names and this only took a couple of minutes. Already bought the iphone/ipad app and using iCloud between all the devices is convenient and easily done. The discount is an even better incentive to get this program, so what are you waiting for.

Works great (8.0)

I’ve tried other Mac genealogy programs, but this is clearly the one to beat, and to my mind remains unbeaten. I have been using this since version 4. Recommend.
