We have made the following updates:
•Security enhancement: When you connect to desktops and apps that redirect local resources to the remote session, you need to grant permission for Remote Desktop to access those resources.
•Connections established from an RDP file or URI scheme are now automatically imported into the Connection Center
•New menu icons
•More default resolutions available based on user feedback
•Fixed an issue with the URI schema where pipes (|) were not parsed correctly
07/11/2016 | Version : 8.0.36 | Size : 14.1 MB
We’ve fixed the following in this release:
- An issue where you got a “Connection reset by peer” error message when you connected over a Remote Desktop Gateway
- An issue on macOS Sierra where full screen mode reset to “Custom” and you couldn’t change it
16/10/2016 | Version : 8.0.35. | Size : 14.1 MB
- Custom ports were ignored when you established a connection from an RDP file.
- You couldn’t map a redirected folder to a drive letter in a remote desktop session.
- The certificate didn’t display correctly on macOS Sierra.

Comments and Ratings for Microsoft Remote Desktop
Broken with Sierra 10.12.2 upate (8.0.36)
1/5 By Glenny 2 Lappies
The Sierra 10.12.2 update broke this version (8.0.36). Cannot now connect local drives to remote systems. Only fix is to use the 8.2 beta which isn't fully working.
When it works, it's a useful tool. The inabilty to copy files to and from remote systems renders it useless for my workflows.
No way to diable menu bar from popping in full screen mode (8.0.36)
1/5 By Jack D. Williams
Are you Microsoft not even testing your tools anymore? Zillions of users out there are complaining regarding this issues and you still have not resolved this.
Add the damned settings in the plist file PLEASE:
or find any other way to prevent the MAC OS menu from displaying in FULL SCREEN MODE - IT IS SOOOOOO ANNOYING!
does what it says (8.0.36)
5/5 By Bryan Potts
Excellent free product to connect remotelly to a microsoft computer
Missing feature (8.0.36)
3/5 By Sven Rijneker
This little app is extremely useful.
But i must say it is missing 1 thing and it so rediculously simple…
The ability to create Subfolders under the “My Desktops” root so you can organise your connections.
I have well over 30 remote desktop connections that i use in order to do my job (Network Engineer). and they are all in 1 big long list.
Giving me the ability to create a folder were i can throw a few of the connections would make this a 5 star rating from me.
As it stands, i cant sort my connections into groups, like Domain controllers, SQL servers etc
This is something that has been asked to be added by a large number of people over most of the time this app has existed. Surely it cant be that difficult to alow me to create subfolders !
Doesn´t work well (8.0.36)
1/5 By Michaelmallmann
Constanly updates but never solves the problem I´m facing!
I use this app to conect to a server running W2012 R2 and the mouse arrow gets completly messed up when the session opens.
I had to install a VM to be able to use a Remote Desktop properly.
No longer works with Windows Home Server (8.0.35.)
1/5 By awkwardbay
Since a recent update this app no longer works with Windows Home Server. I get a Connection Reset by Peer message.
Is this broken by design because Windows 2003 is no longer supported?
Colour depth setting seems to have no effect (8.0.34)
3/5 By Routari
Dropping the colour depth can often improve latency, but this seems to be fixed at 32bit, no matter what you change the setting to.
Problems with macOS Sierra (8.0.34)
3/5 By Soopadoubled
I use this daily and it worked flawlessly with previous versions of OS X, however there seems to be issues with macOS. My main gripe is that you can no longer run it in full screen on a second display and continue to use macOS on your primary display - all other displays are just blacked out.
Flawless under OSX. Buggy under macOS (8.0.34)
3/5 By Biggash
Please fix this for the new OS. I’d happily come back and give it five stars.
5/5 By ColourfulSmile
This is such a great app, I can use the brilliance of my mac to do the manual PC only applications that my old laptop runs. I just dial into it and it works!
TIP: Export the link and have it handy directly in the right hand side of your task bar. Log into the machine you need in one click!
5/5 By AG Consultancy
I’ve been looking for so long for an updated version for Mac… Thank you so much… so much neater and smoother too.
1/5 By snigatkins
Terrible. Connects fine to server, but screen blacked mostly blacked out. Bits I can see won’t move, or if clicked disappear too. Completely unusable.
Keyboard issues (8.0.32)
4/5 By Pedro Cabreado
Having trouble with wrong characters appearing when using a UK keyboard
No longer works with Windows Home Server (8.0.32)
1/5 By awkwardbay
This app updates more often than all my other apps put together and most times nothing appesrs to change but every now and then something changes that just stops it working on one system. In this case it is a Windows Home Server which I know is no longer supported by Microsoft but sadly Microsoft failed to provide any sort of upgrade path for a 32-bit machine so I’m stuck with it until it breaks completely.
For the record here is my previous review of this Appn which is still just as appropriate:
Since the recent update this app no longer works with Windows Home Server. I get the Connection Reset by Peer message.
It does still work with Windows 7 though
Since the update I now have to use the iPad App which so far has not been damaged by a bad 'upgrade'.
Cut copy paste no longer works (8.0.32)
1/5 By Flyerblade
I suspect this might actually be shift/ctrl etc not working anymore but the result is the same - infuiriating to use.
I’ve lived with the credential stuff not working (it doesn’t remember anything so you have to re-enter it, then it doesn’t forward it correctly so you have to reenter it again at the end) for ages but this is the final straw making it unusable.
Can’t paste (8.0.32)
1/5 By Moobar
It’s 2016 and this app won’t let me paste into input fields? Sure, no worries, I’ll happily type in the 60 character password.
5/5 By ArmagoN1
This may actually make me use my Mac more. Now I can simply access my Windows devices from here.
I can’t open my remote session! (8.0.32)
1/5 By LuBz1
This new update is horrendous! I am unable to open my remote session.
App no longer works. (8.0.32)
1/5 By Rees1973
This app no longer works since the most recent update. Just crashes the app. Using a brand new iMac 3.3 Ghz intel core i7.
Bottom of screen cropped (8.0.32)
1/5 By Will gamer
A very poor update. Apparently the cropping of the top of the screen has been fixed (which was never an issue for me) but now it crops the bottom instead! It seem all they did was to shift the whole screen by a few pixel - very shoddy coding and testing. For now I’m reverting back to 8.0.31
5/5 By TINIE LOVER
don’t know what the other reviews are on about. needed this to access college portal and worked perfectly. perfectly fit on screen and wasa eaasy to navigate around. thank you legens
Yet another rubbish “update" (8.0.31)
1/5 By Depicus
HOLY POOR DEVELOPERS - We are now on update 5 since the blank bottom bug was introduced and STILL NOT FIXED. Loses 20 pixels from the top in full screen so the menus at the top are nearly impossible to use. Microsoft updates are like Russian Roulette - you never know if the new version will work or not. Update - so we’ve had five updates since and feedback here yet still not fixed.
Thankfully I cannot now log in to half my servers so the errors above seem less important. Monkeys would be over qualified to write this rubbish
OK - except for the black bar and hidden menu bar (8.0.31)
2/5 By JJGlebe
Have used this app for years to connect to my workplace and mostly it does what you'd expect. However the previously mentioned bug with a black bar taking up the bottom half centimetre of the screen, and which causes an equivalent amount to disappear from the top of the window when in Full Screen view is absolutely infuriating - it makes title/menu bars in Windows very difficult to see and use.
It’s hard to believe the developers have not sorted this out in the updates released since the bug first crept in.
Z Order of windows still messed up! (8.0.30)
1/5 By really_frustrated1001
Version 8.0.26 worked fine with our business application.
All versions after this have seriously messed up the Z order.
I am using a windows application that worked perfectly but now has windows hidden behind others
This makes the app unusable
Please fix this as soon as possible
EPIC FAIL! (8.0.30)
1/5 By Fairyness
Microsoft!…what have you done with this update?!…the previous versions worked just fine, but now, after updating, part of the top screen window has disappeared as well as periodic lock-ups running on iPad Pro! - Furthermore, this update no longer stores the RDT server login passwords even after ‘saving’ them.
It is needless to say that ‘updates’ are suppose to IMPROVE the running efficiency of apps, not DEPROVE it as it is now the case!
This update is a quintessence of this subject title! - this is something Bill Gates would have never allowed to happen.
Thanks for fixing (8.0.30)
5/5 By Pietro Di Meglio
No longer have the issue of being unable to connect. This app is very useful to me as I can log into my college server and work from home.
Keyboard mapping for UK (8.0.30)

Quirky but somewhat works (8.0.30)
3/5 By Sitsofe
Summary: Fair but long stand issues/wishes go unfixed while new problems are added.
(New thoughts on 8.0.30)
The quirks continue and upgrading is a game of bug roulette with new breakages being introduced while other things are fixed. For example in the 8.0.30 the top of some fullscreen Windows desktops is cut off (but this wasn’t a problem on earlier 8.0.2x releases). I now have two remote desktop apps too - one called "MicrosoftRemoteDesktop" (which seems to be 8.0.28) in addition to "Microsoft Remote Desktop” (which is 8.0.30). Long standing issues (like the scrambled display when someone else takes over your remote session) persist unfixed for years. I wonder if the original developers from before this program was owned by Microsoft are the ones maintaining it now?
(New thoughts on 8.0.10)
This App could do with a little bit more polish. For example why doesn’t the search area have a little cross button at the far right? Why forcefully display the release notes after an upgrade when I will have read them on the App Store? Why doesn’t the clipboard work when I am using a remote desktop to the Mac and then running Microsoft Remote Desktop in that?
The big news is that in 8.0.8 search has been brought back! Now those of us logging into multiple Windows machines don’t have to worry about hunting around for the correct entry. The next wish would be to streamline things so just an extra keypress selects the entry if it is the only one displayed (or allow easier keyboard switching between the search and the desktop entries).
A long standing issue is that the old (non-Appstore) remote desktop client would map your Mac’s keyboard layout appropriately when connecting to a remote machine with a different keyboard layout. The appstore remote desktop client has never done this and sadly 8.0.8 still has this issue.
it connects without issue to Windows 2012 R2.
Other features the old client that this doesn’t are:
• Auto reconnection
• Ability to connect to a machine via the dock
And features the Windows client has:
• Resizing of the remote desktop when going full screen.
A must have if you are connecting to Windows 2012 R2.
doesn’t seem to be downloadable (8.0.30)

Doesn’t download (8.0.30)

I can’t get this to download. Whether this is an AppStore iuues or Microsoft doesn’t matter to me – but someone ought to care.
