Comments and Ratings for RAGE®: Campaign Edition

Fantastic port (1.0.1)
18/01/2014 16:05:00 5/5 By MikeLockyer
As I expect from Aspyr, this port is fantastic. The graphics never lag, even on the higher settings. Did not crash or freeze once as I played through it. As you would expect from a FPS, it’s better with a gamepad. The game itself is very good, 10+ hours gameplay on a harder setting, but has a very dissapointing ending. - Played on a MBP 2.2 i7, 16GB RAM, Radeon HD 6750M 1024mb

Extended tech demo for failed tech (1.0.1)
05/01/2014 11:58:00 1/5 By The Happy Space Invader
id Software make great graphics engines (probably), but these days, so does everyone else. Rage is supposed to demonstrate a new engine calle “id Tech 5" that uses “megatextures” which, as I understand it, instead of having multiple flat images pasted to the sides of polygons, there’s just one giant single texture applied over the whole world. If there’s supposed to be an advantage to doing this, then I’ve missed it, because the net result on Mac, PC, Xbox 360 and PS3 was a blurry mess that gradually resolves itself into sharp textures every single time you look around. If you install an SSD drive into your PS3, this is drastically reduced… and on a top-end SSD-enabled iMac (such as I have), it’s not too bad, but still noticable. And this is probably why, since 2011, the only games to use id Tech 5 are Rage and the forthcoming Doom 4 and Wolfenstein… all essentially id Software games. So, as a tech demo, it fails. Megatextures are clearly not the way forward and there are many many far more beautifiul games that do not take this approach. As game, however, it also fails. The story is completely hackneyed. The character you play has zero personality. The whole environment seems like a rip-off of Fallout 3. The fact that the game was rescued from the rocks by Bethesda, and had some RPG style element stacked on is all-too-obvious. The non-playable characters are completely forgettable and have a discintcly last gen animation style. They also remain stuck to the spot on which you first encounter them… they don’t move around or anything. The enemies are also forgettable, and display a last-gen style of AI (roll to cover, shoot, duck, shoot, etc.) And, as a game on a Mac, this also fails as it does not properly recognise either the PS3 controller over Bluetooth or the Xbox 360 controller over the Tattieboggle drivers… as most other high profile games on Mac do (especially those via Steam).

FInd this game by chance and being a lover of fps downloaded it. Excellent game, good story and I enjoyed the side missions. Agree with other posts that it is a bit short and the end was a bit flat…. PLayed it a few times now though and enjoyed it both times throughout. Bring on the next one!!

Oh so close….. (1.0.1)
27/08/2013 12:08:00 3/5 By ITTM
I was hoping for 'better than Borderlands' and RAGE came oh so close. the Graphics are gorgeous running really well on my iMac, sound was atmospheric for a post holocaust environment. The story build was good with story missions linking nicely building your private arsenal of destruction as you go. the weapons and ammo varients were excellent…'how should I kill him I have so many options…ho hum'..great driving options…races and time trials and package delivery…love it love it love it….and then it ended. WHAT ?????? Break into this HUGE city…visit a couple of rooms…kill a couple of guards and mutants throw a couple of switches and that's it ?????….oh wait I'll just jump back and do some of the none story stuff I'd left behind….what's this roll the credits and goodnight….oh come on. Time to reload and go back to start again. This game promised SO much and delivered all but the open ended gameplay i so desired. Oh well…..back to Borderlands….lock'n'load

Severe Issues with Retina Macbook Pro. (1.0.1)
06/08/2013 11:16:00 2/5 By L7ULL
I have just purchased rage on the mac app store, it does not properly support the retina macbook pro hardware. I appreciate that the game does not support the retina display resolution, this is fully understandable, but there are some other severely limiting factors. The highest resolution supported is 1440 x 900 (16:10), this is too low, it should at least be scalable to 1920 x 1200/1080. When changing the resolution in full screen mode, the bottom right of the entire image shifts off the display making the menu system inaccessible and crops at least a third of the UI. A fix for this is the change the resolution in windowed mode, then change back into fullscreen mode. Antialiasing is not supported, I believe this is due to a lack of support for the Nvidia GT 650M? Other graphics enhancements such as GPU transcode are also not supported, again perhaps because of no 650M optimisation. I appreciate this game was probably ported before the retina macbook pro, but given the spec of this machine, RAGE should be running much better. I expect more from iD software/aspyr, especially because the game was just discounted giving it renewed interest in response to quakecon.

Terrible performance! (1.0.1)
24/01/2013 19:12:00 1/5 By haha trumpets
Maybe its an Nvidia thing..but this game as well as Call of Duty Black ops are TERRIBLE on the GT650M. Whats the point in buying something your specs meet by a long shot and find that you cant run it? Steer clear one and all.

Need update for controller!! (1.0.1)
31/12/2012 13:03:00 3/5 By Saka37
I found Rage on Iphone far better. The game doesnt actually support gamepad, needs fixing. I use a madcatz controller and it works fine but it doesnt work for this game. Not worth getting if you intend to play using a controller. The graphics was alright nothing brilliant. The gameplay is good. Sounds are brilliant they keep you on your toes.

Needs Multiplayer (1.0.1)
23/12/2012 14:10:00 2/5 By sPitE12
The campaign is average, and although it has some very good characters and aspects, it is WAY too short, i completed it in a few hours, and the side missions are too boring to bother completing. it NEEDS multiplayer just like every other version of rage, that would make it A LOT more popular and fun to play. but needs an update to introduce multiplayer NOT a separate game which needs to be payed. PLEASE INTRODUCE A MULTIPLAYER UPDATE!!!!!!

Fantastic shooter (1.0.1)
17/12/2012 22:21:00 5/5 By flickr_steve
Really great gfx and some cool weapons and nasty monsters. Great game! I'm on a 2011 iMac and I found it best to lower those textures / switch off the smoothing and disable vertical sync. Awesome framerates and 1080res. Cannot complain. Great game…… (though i must ask - will The Scorchers DLC be available on Mac ??)

Not good (1.0.1)
17/11/2012 00:42:00 1/5 By 2too4
My Macbook pro exceeds all of the requirements but still this game freezes at any opportunity. Forced reboot every time. Very frustrating and disappointing.

Doesn't work!! (1.0.1)
17/10/2012 20:08:00 1/5 By MoxenUK
Very frustrating. Everytime I run the game it crashes!! Expect more from this developer… My graphics card is listed as being supported, I have ridiculous amounts of RAM… Should work!! Am asking for my money back!!

This Game IS Borderlands (1.0)

doesn't work (1.0.1)
02/09/2012 13:50:00 1/5 By Sidakillo
I bought this game once I moved into Mountain lion since I previously owned snow leopard, I downloaded and installed wich it took forever, and once I downloaded and put it to play it turns out that I can't pass the start of the game as the longest I will arrive is getting into the first car with the guy and then it frozes all, from aspyr they haven't come with a solution yet, so until then thats my rating, will change if they get it sorted soon enough as it is been few weeks now

Good Game (1.0.1)

I've been really enjoying the game after fixing the install errors, and it has some really nice visuals

Not even getting past the App Store download (1.0.1)
05/07/2012 21:36:00 1/5 By JarrodRoyles
I just bought this game, and everytime I attempt to download it it freezes at 500MB and says it's calculating, I've tried downloading other apps and they're fine, so could I please have some help? Once I have the game running I will change my rating.

Rage (1.0.1)
22/06/2012 13:35:00 3/5 By Zorglubismad
The game was quite fun, good graphics, nice story. It could have done with a bit more quests and freedom and the end was really disappointing .

The latest update has made the game unplayable (1.0.1)
27/05/2012 11:50:00 1/5 By deathwishdave
My souped up MacPro is unable to run the game at a playable speed. I used Time Machine to revert to the previous version, and all is well again.

Poor value throughout (1.0)
05/03/2012 10:57:00 2/5 By Quoad
Considerable difficulties getting the game onto the machine, AND getting it to work. Additional difficulties caused by numerous complications with Aspyr and 3rd party drivers for an Xbox 360 controller (long story short, a controller would only work full-screen, if plugged in before the app was launched, with a .kext file disabled via OS X terminal). The full-length campaign took me just 11hrs 20 mins. No multiplayer available. No noteworthy or worthwhile distinctions between 'easy,' 'hard,' 'nightmare' etc difficulty levels. Once you've played it through, IMO that's pretty much it. Gameplay is also very simple. No RPG elements, realistically speaking, except for the ability to craft a very small number of pre-determined objects. No leveling up. No improvements to your character. Gunfire / weaponry is dull and unimaginative. Sights never waver. Every shot's a hit (if the sights are on target). Most ammo types are effectively identical, and some weapons are utterly pointless (e.g. silent weapons bring no advantages whatsoever. Some of the more interesting-looking weapons, such as mind control bolts, are utterly useless nearly all the time - because your 'mind controlled' target either gets killed by the people around him in 0.05 seconds, or else is too far from anyone else to be any use whatsoever. Remote control explosive cars sound awesome, but - in practice - will enver make it close to the enemy before being shot / blown up). By the end of the game, I was still mostly playing with the pistol and shotgun - weapons I'd picked up within half an hour of the game's start. Characters are execrably dull. No personality. No imagination. Long, long filmic sequences and introductory dialogues that cannot be skipped. Authentically agonising, because the characters are neither interesting nor engaging. The missions, too, lack any form of real engagement or imagination. AI is predictable. Every bad guy goes to exactly the same shelter point and uses exactly the same move as the person you just shot. Baddies spawn in front of you. They never try to flank, or try anything creative. Driving… a potential saviour… provides some of the few more interesting moments. However, cars are v limited (you get to choose from one of very few upgrades - weapon type, 1 upgrade to engine / boost / etc) and races - as soon as rockets are introduced - become exercises in random futility. The 'skill' element of driving becomes almost non-existent, and the potential joy of driving (IMO) goes along with it. All in all… an unchallenging game, with a dull plot and awful characters. I kept on hoping it'd improve (hence the fact that I saw it through to the end), and that - combined with the £28 I'd spent on it - kept on dragging me through. Ultimately, just as I was expecting to move to a new area with (hopefully) more interesting gameplay, the whole darned game ended. There is beauty in the scenery, fair enough. That's why I've given this 2*s. Otherwise, it proved to be an exercise in irritation, frustration, and bad implementation from start to finish. This game has been panned by users in online reviews; there is nothing here that (IMO) justifies its £28 price tag.

Will not launch (1.0)

Like others the game refuses to run. Very poor

RAGE (1.0)
16/02/2012 23:42:00 4/5 By Graham_Burbs
The game play and graphics on this are as everyone says 'amazing'. The first few hours are addictive and exhilarating. Some of the ideas are different and the realism is total. In the past three years games have developed closer to film and this is a great example. The length of the game is I must say a little frustrating as it was completed in only a few hours (and i'm no 'gamer' honest), however, these hours were enjoyed and it will be played again, and again. But the top price will put some people off from what is a good game, but would be excellent if only it was longer. Only advice, don't play when the kids are up. Bit scary with lots of gore and swearing.

will not complete the download? really bad !!! cant restart the download process or cancel it !! DISSAPOINTED TO THE MAX! DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY!!!

Takes three boots before staying up (1.0)
09/02/2012 11:55:00 3/5 By dweeb ameliorate
Each time I want to launch this game, I have to do it a minimum of three times before it stops crashing, which it typically does when I'm accessing a saved game. About a third of the time it reports an error when saving or opening a saved game later from within the game.

Ultra-mooth play on 2011 iMac (1.0)
08/02/2012 13:47:00 5/5 By pjh501
In terms of performance, i'm suprised and delighted at how well the game runs and plays on the iMac. With everything maxed-out, the game never skips a beat. I've never thought of macs as rigs that could play the latest games without any compromise - I guess that's changed! As for the game itself, it's very atmospheric. Great shooting mechanics, and enemy AI that will keep you on your toes. The structure and game's story amounts to fetch this, do this, do that - but for me that's ok. This game is unapologetically a straightforward shooter and it does what it sets out to do very well indeed. Recommended

Great game, slight graphical issues. (1.0)
05/02/2012 20:58:00 4/5 By Keith Price
Playing this on a late 2011 Macbook Pro 13", I'm surprised that the Intel HD3000 can handle this game as well as it does. The frame rate isn't great but it doesn't take away from the game play. Textures tend to appear as you look around but I don't care about that too much, gameplay is more important than graphics anyway. The only issue was that the game wouldn't start after I installed it. It boiled down to making sure that your main language was set as English and not British English, no idea why but it works perfectly now. More games like this would be great. Bethesda had a hand in this game so a port of Skrim would be superb.

review #2 - brilliant in windowed mode (1.0)
05/02/2012 17:51:00 5/5 By spriggins
after first starting it in maximised view, it sucked, it was laggy, you coulndt change the resolution wothout the screen playing up, but as soon as winowed mode was selected it ran amazing fast, there are still some areas and moments where the graphics have to catch up, and some lag, but otherwise working well. I recommend playing it windowed style, at 1280 x 720, (my setting)

WOW, runs better on my iMac than on my gaming PC!!!! (1.0)
04/02/2012 21:36:00 5/5 By AudioRiver
I have had this game for a few months now on my gaming PC, in that time I have hardly been able to play it due to driver issues, framerate issues and major texture pop-ins. Not only does this new mac version starts and run first time, it is smoother, has no lag or framerate issues and has less texture pop-ins (although there are still some). I am now really enjoying this game, it is fast paced, has fantastic graphics and for the first time I can play without having to fiddle with any settings. This is running on my new Mid 2011 iMac, all settings set to maximum and I am amazed how well it runs. I understand that not every one will have the same expereince on getting the game to run perfectly but I am very pleased with my purchase.

Fix for those European users having problems starting the game... (1.0)
04/02/2012 16:14:00 4/5 By RobGoodison
If you are having problems with the game quitting immediately after trying to start: Go to System Preferences > Language & Text - ensure that English is the uppermost Language on the Language Tab. The game should now start. Seems there is an issue if English is not the most preferred System Language.

Will not launch! (1.0)
04/02/2012 14:45:00 1/5 By kovs
I have now downloaded this game 3 times from the app store, and it will not launch!!!! if you check the F.A.Q. section on the Aspyr website (link at the top of this page) you will see that others are having the same issue. I would suggest that people wait until there's a fix for this issue.
