“The biggest software advance for writers since the word processor.”
- Best-selling novelist Michael Marshall Smith

Typewriter. Ring-binder. Scrapbook. Scrivener combines all the writing tools you need to craft your first draft, from nascent notion to final full stop.

Tailor-made for creating long manuscripts, Scrivener banishes page fright by allowing you to compose your text in any order, in sections as large or small as you like. Got a great idea but don’t know where it fits? Write when inspiration strikes and find its place later. Grow your manuscript organically, idea by idea.

Whether you plan or plunge, Scrivener works your way: meticulously outline every last detail first, or hammer out a complete draft and restructure later. Or do a bit of both. All text sections in Scrivener are fully integrated with its outlining tools, so working with an overview of your manuscript is only ever a click away, and turning Chapter Four into Chapter One is as simple as drag and drop.

Need to refer to research? In Scrivener, your background material is always at hand, and you can open it right alongside what you’re working on. Write a description based on a photograph. Transcribe an interview. Check for consistency with an earlier chapter.

Once you’re ready to share your work with the world, compile everything into a single document for printing, create an e-book, or export to popular formats such as Word, PDF, Final Draft or plain text. You can even share using different formatting, so that you can write in your favorite font and still keep your editor happy.

Scrivener’s users include best-selling novelists, screenwriters, students, academics, lawyers, journalists and translators. It won’t tell you how to write - it just provides everything you need to start writing and keep writing.

Comments and Ratings for Scrivener

Stunning software programme. perfect for my needs. (2.8.1)
15/01/2017 09:57:00 5/5 By Polyzoan
Updated review. I bought this software to use for writing academic manuscripts. This is such a pwerful and stunningly created software programme nothing comes close. As another reviewer has previously stated I have also wasted so much time, effort and exense looking at other apps - totally pointless. Scrivener is perfect. There is an apparent issue at this time with the sporadic and multiple generation of conflict files. I have only experienced this a couple of times. As a previous reviewer has stated simply ensure that everything is saved and synced with Dropbox before you open the IOS app on your ipad. I initially was grumbling about conflicts but have had non since I ensured the app had been backed up and synced fully.

iPad sync always a let down - until…. (2.8.1)

I love Scrivener, but have always been disappointed that there is no iOS version for my iPad. My previous review was critical of the difficulty of working on a Scrivener document using my iOS devices. I am delighted to edit that out! Lierature and Latte have developed an iOS app whichI have been using for some time now. It works seamlessly with Scrivener, curing all my gripes and making the hoops I used to have to jump through unnecessary! As long as I sync before opening the app, and then again before opening it on another device, then I have no issues at all with it. Have not yet had a conflict. I have uninstalled all other apps I used to try to enable me to work on my iOS device with Scrivener. in addition, my preliminary work is done on the excellent “scapple” app developed by L&L, which is effectively a very versatile "mind map” type app. Notes and ideas I create in Scapple can easily be dragged into the binder of Scrivener and become text notes, which can then be edited and moved around in the binder on the Scrivener platform in the ususal way. Only drawback is as a mac user, there is no option to compile to pages format. Looking forward to that small inconvenience being attended to.

Having shopped around and wasted a lot of time using and looking at other programmes that are supposed to do what Scrivener can do. They all failed over one issue, they did not seem to be able to handle large projects with the ease that Scrivener does. I have been using Scrivener for a few years and have grown to rely on this powerful but beutifully crafted piece of software. Forget all the competitors out there, get Scrivener and get creative.

I love this App (2.8)

This app is so helpful and simple to use. There are a few issues with spacing when a document is tranferred to word, but it is simple to sort out as a part of the editing process. The simplicity of multiple screen working and file organising is so helpful. I have written several 50k plus word documents on Scrivener and it has saved me so much time and helped me to keep control of the complications inherent in keeping on top of chapters, research and character consistency. This really was money well spent.

Wish I could give it ten stars — or a hundred (2.8)

Microsoft Word arrgh - all that loading a file and closing it and loading another one; and not being able to save them in the order you want. And everything else that is rubbish. Including the fact that it’s 70 quid a year. Scrivener — every document and subdocument right there in the side bar. Every PDF and link you need for reseearch — right there in the side bar. It doesn’t just make work easier. it makes it so much easier it’s unreal. Only tiny complaint is the dropbox sync between macbook and ipad is a tiny bit hard to work out until you realise you have to save your work in the Scrivener folder not the dropbox folder.

Mac/PC and IOS convergence! (2.8)
15/08/2016 11:27:00 5/5 By Nkersov
I bought Scrivener for Mac and for IOS on the same day. Here’s why... After trying just about every combination for syncing documents between my Mac and iPad, I’d all but given up. The likes of Word and Pages just didn’t play well together across platforms, so many IOS apps did not deliver the required Dropbox sync option and/or were pigs to work with, and the great hope of Ulysees proved to be more hype than substance, especially on IOS. I’d been aware of Scrivener, but hadn’t bought it because there was no IOS version. As soon as I discovered it was available, I took the plunge. Spending the best part of £50 on Scrivener for Mac and IOS has already proven a great move. The app is changing the way I write, and stripping away the fear of different developers products mashing up my files. Scrivener to and from Mac and IOS works very well via Dropbox. The Mac app is, obviously, a mature and stable product. Very attractively priced, too. The IOS version is already excellent, and needs only to add Scrivening mode for global search and replace across a project, plus an ePub compilation option. It is such a relief to leave behind Pages and Word, at least for the majority of my long form work. If you are in a similar position, I can recommend Scrivener as a top quality product, that honestly does what it says on the tin!

Simply stunning writing tool (2.8)

As an academic I use Scrivener to write my draft and final copy research papers on. It is simply the best tool available. More of my colleagues are starting use it. The fact that it is available on IOS makes for an even better experience.

Best screenwriting software (2.8)
25/07/2016 21:04:00 5/5 By peutichat
I spent a great deal of time comparing and testing all the screenwriting software around. And for me Scrivener is the best. Dramatically cheaper than Final Draft but so much better. Second best I found was Storyist, but it kept crashing all the time. And Celtx is great as standalone but quickly missing out on the great outlining features scrivener provide. Things I love I can’t find anywhere else: - corckboard card outlining (I pick the option to put the whole card in color) - The insert and preview of images used as research - The characters cards (Although I think things could be improved there) - The title of the scenes are NOT scene headings! Of course an outline title is a summary not the location! Every other software gets this wrong. Only scrivener make sense in that regards. So kudos to the developers. Keep it up!

Scrivener - now Mac and iOS, brilliant (2.8)
15/07/2016 20:26:00 5/5 By Oğuz60
I’ve used Scrivener for over five years and it has worked a treat. It is fantastic in bringing all my research, corkboard (for planning, adjustment and over-view) and wrtiting into one, organised space. Whether long form writing, or simply preparing individual blog posts - it has been not only a solid and dependable companion, but fully featured and a true delight to use. Now, we are on the cusp of the release of the iOS version, and that programme shines brightly. Long I’ve wanted to work on my writing on the go as it were. In a coffee shop, or redeming the time when I find myself suddenly having to wait. Now on my iPad, I’ve been set free - it is powerfully liberating. I am finding it easier to write on the iPad than sitting at my desk. Wonderful. I’ve even found myself doing little tweeks on my iPhone - I never expected to do that. As a participant in the Beta testing of the iOS version, I can attest to the delight that the iOS version is - rich in features and rock solid. For over a month I diligently searched for a ‘bug’ to report and failed dismally. I am waiting with baited breath for the official release on Wednesday. The syncing between my various iOS devices has worked brilliantly, dependably and flawlessly. Once it detected some sync conflicts and saved the questioned files for me to examine - absolutely nothing lost. I ended up using the Beta version to work on live, and for me, important, projects and without disappointment. Very highly recommened. If you write and do research, then this is an ideal app. If you use an iPad, I would call it essential.

Amazing software (2.8)

Rock solid, good price and does what it says on the tin. I don’t use even 10% of the full feature set but it’s good to know the features are there should I need them. Many many YouTube videos available to show all the bits and bobs available. It’s a joy to write using this app.
