Description

The Unarchiver is a small and easy to use program that can unarchive many different kinds of archive files. It will open common formats such as Zip, RAR (including v5), 7-zip, Tar, Gzip and Bzip2. It will also open many older formats, such as StuffIt, DiskDoubler, LZH, ARJ and ARC. It will even open other kinds of files, like ISO and BIN disc images, some Windows .EXE installers. The list is actually much longer - see the program homepage for the full list.

The Unarchiver also tries to detect and correctly handle the filename encoding in the archives it opens, allowing you to open files from every part of the world without getting garbled filenames.

The Unarchiver aims to be the only unarchiving program you will ever need, and to stay out of your way.

However, if you want to browse the contents of archives, or if you want to support development of The Unarchiver, look for "The Archive Browser" on the Mac App Store, or go to http://archivebrowser.c3.cx/! It lets you browse and preview archive contents, and find out information about archives!

Also, if you need to open archives on your iPad or iPhone, look for "Archives" on the App Store, or go to http://archives.c3.cx/. It is based on The Unarchiver, and lets you easily handle Archives on iOS!

Comments and Ratings for The Unarchiver

Does what it says (3.11.1)
25/11/2016 06:40:00 5/5 By Robw1962
Unarchiver handles large zipped files beyond 4GB. The built in one on mac OS X can fail doing this. This app works and works well. Its really designed to be used from the file that needs to be unzipped rather than as a front end by itself. E.g. change the default app for uninstalling to this app. Its better and more flexible than the Mac one so do it and forget about it. Unclear as how people can find fault with an app thats free, better than the one supplied by Apple.

Useless (3.11.1)

Worked for a while, and then I tried running it one morning and the icon just sat there bouncing up and down indefinitely. Had to force close.

Good app to uncompress files (3.11.1)

simple and nice! It can handle all types of archives. Love this app!

the Darkened screen (3.11.1)
26/07/2016 15:29:00 3/5 By oh_psssssst
I just downloaded it, seems liek a good thing, my only issue is there’s this annoying screen overlaid on top of Preferences “advising” me how to make this app a default unzipper for my all files (thank you, I’ve been using mac for a little bit longer than two days I know such basics) but the problem is I have no idea how to get rid of it. And it seems important as it covers a list of all possible files this app could open for me. IT’s really annoying, also I tried to go to the website service support and it seems it ahs been abandoned in 2011. It’s a nice app, it does what it promises and it’s for free so I don’t want to be a grumpy one, but please please remove this useless screen from preferences. Regards,

Should be built into the operating system (3.11.1)

It feels as if it is sometimes, simple and clean - Has never failed me.

version 3.11 (3.11)
19/05/2016 11:15:00 1/5 By magnoman
Hi 3.91 is fantastic but 3.11 always brings up an error to say incomplete file even though i know its fine. Pressing the continue anyway extracts as normal.

Worked perfectly (3.10.1)
11/05/2016 11:22:00 5/5 By Thetalkinghead
I have no skill whatsoever in understanding file formats so obviously have no apprec of the details of the appp's capabilities but what i do know is that i urgently needed to open a 7z doc and this app did it instantly.

unix executable (3.10.1)
02/05/2016 10:43:00 3/5 By Kyle watson 53
There seams to be a gray bit in side the Archive Formats box and i am trying to check the unix compress file. (needs to be fixed) I cannot check any boxes especially the one I was talking about (unix compress file) The one thing I would like from this app is an update for OSX el capitan

Very helpfull (3.10.1)

The best way to open .rar archives on a Mac.

NOT flawless... (3.10.1)
10/12/2015 13:58:00 4/5 By Roger Braintree
Do not set this app as the default handler for .zip files, as with some .zip implementations, you can get unpredictable results (which have just cost me several days). The app is so unobtrusive, and its icons so similar, that it’s not obvious what’s happening when it happens. I’ve had this installed since 2011, and I had it as the default .zip handler. Recently, I had to restore data from a 1Password backup file. These are created automatically by 1Password.app, and zipped. Using The Unarchiver to decompress them results in a folder (not a file), which is unusable for the intended purpose. Using Archive Utility (built into OS X) results in a file — correct format and usable. It may be that The Unarchiver is more strictly ‘correct’ in what it’s doing — but .zip files created under OS X will be designed to be unzipped using Archive Utility, and one can get different results. The Unarchiver appears unbeatable for anything else, however. Just don’t set it as a default handler for .zips.

Great replacement for Mac OS Archive Utility (3.10.1)
28/09/2015 11:44:00 5/5 By Groke
For reasons unknown, my archive utility will compress but not extract. The unarchiver does extract, so a simple switch and now I can unzip things again. Nice.

BEST SO FAR (3.9.1)

…and I don’t have a single complaint. This app is exactly as it should be and I wouldn’t change any part of it. My hearty thanks to the developers!

Life er.. I mean….file saver. (3.9.1)
22/07/2015 11:55:00 5/5 By LadyMacMari
I was all for deleting a bunch of files that had weird extensions as I didn’t want to tear any more hair out but then I came across this little wonder. It worked its magic seamlessly & with no fuss, restoring my files to their former format. Absolutely marvelous!

solved my problem (3.9.1)
18/06/2015 16:10:00 5/5 By drmfair
I needed to unarchive something protected with a password (Mac’s native unarchiver wouldn’t do it), and it was starting to look like I’d need to buy WinZIP for their outrageous price. I tried this, and it did the trick—easily. Much appreciated.

Superb! (3.9.1)
16/05/2015 11:17:00 5/5 By Indika De Fonseka
As a first time user of this app and of .rar files, I was pleasantly surprised as to how easy it was!! Happy to recommend!

Brilliant (3.9.1)

This is a brilliant WinRar alternative for Mac. It’s fast, easy to use, and flexible.

Brilliant application in need of a Yosemite update (3.9.1)
18/04/2015 17:29:00 4/5 By KUPOinyourWINDOW
The title of this review speaks for itself. On previous versions of OS X, this application did it’s job almost perfectly… On the current version (Yosemite) the preferences for the app do not do anything.

Can’t Fault (3.9.1)
18/04/2015 10:28:00 5/5 By SEOGUYUK
Using Mavericks OS on my iMac, downloaded a 3.9 GB file with dozens of zipped folders within it, tried Archive Utility - it couldn’t extract the contents, UnRar X was no use because of the file type, so decided to download The Unachiver, it extracted everything within 60 seconds - couldn’t ask for more.

Save your time and sanity... (3.9.1)
15/04/2015 13:31:00 3/5 By B Rhodes
…and get UnpackX instead. This works…eventually but is unintuitive.

The best (3.9.1)

An amazing app. Totally essential for OS X. Perfect.

Quirky (3.9.1)
06/03/2015 10:50:00 4/5 By Alasdair Page
Started receiving an error when trying to queue more than about five operations that The Unarchiver can't crunch the files. Works fine for .r01, .r02 files etc. but when I open a .rar file it does something weird. Maybe it's not properly associated with this app correctly. I'd also like to see a couple of things; some indication of the time remaining for unarchiving both the current file and the remaining queue would be nice. More importantly perhaps, the ability to pause unarchiving. Coming from Windows I really like this app, it's far better than others on the Mac. It's a bit strange coming from WinRAR which has a lot of features and capability for both compressing and decompressing files, but for now this will have to do. I'm not aware of anything better (on the Mac).

It did what other would not (3.9.1)

a free app which just unarchived 10,000 .7z files for me all in one go automatically. What more can you ask for. Thanks a lot

Disappointed (3.9)
13/11/2014 09:27:00 1/5 By MacGrumpy
After reading the reviews I thought that I had found the answer to my problems but after installing I simply had a report that the program could not un-zip the program required! I shall now dump it!

Not working properly in Yosemite (3.9)

Hi Dag, I love the app, but since installing Yosemite, the tick boxes are not functioning properly now. Regards
