Congratulations! You’re the newly-elected, all-powerful “Presidente” of the proud Caribbean nation of Tropico. Taking the reins for another glorious term on your sunny island is all well and good, but do you have what it takes to become a serious player on the world stage?

Whether you choose to rule as benevolent chairman, clever technocrat or corrupt despot, it’s up to you to transform Tropico from amusing banana republic into a 21st century world power worthy of your grand vision in this witty combination of city builder and political simulator.

Key features:

• Create your own paradise by developing Tropico the way you want! Choose from over 100 buildings and turn your island into a top holiday destination, an industrial powerhouse, a police state or all three.

• All of the people, all of the time. Balance the noisy demands of Tropico’s own political factions with the distant rumblings of wealthy superpowers while staying friendly with overseas trading partners.

• Life on a tropical island isn’t all sunshine and piña coladas! Prepare to face natural disasters such as volcanos, tsunamis and hurricanes.

• Take on the challenge of a 20-mission Campaign Mode or enjoy power without responsibility in Sandbox Mode!

• Appoint your favourite citizens to ministerial posts to implement your government program.

• March Tropico into the 21st century with the Modern Times expansion pack: launch a space program, control Internet access and build architectural showpieces such as the diamond cathedral and “Babel Tower”.

Comments and Ratings for Tropico 4: Gold Edition

Don’t Bother. Does not work. (1.1.4)
22/08/2016 00:31:00 1/5 By Jumbo40
Initially the game loaded (although had to log out from Game Centre) and played the game for around 2 hours and then it crashed and has not loaded yet. As with the other reviews, the initail animations show but nothing. I’ve re-installed and still nothing. I’ve emailed support and have yet to get a response (not even a courtesy “we have recieved your email blah blah blah!”). I’ll be seaking a refund for sure. This game should not be in the app store at all! Disappointed!

On a brand new iMac running Yosemite it crashes on launch. It shows the intro animations and then bam! You don’t even get to see the main menu :(

Was amazing until yosemite (1.1.4)

This game used to work perfectly with the old system. Great detail, endless creativity and great fun. But when I updated to yosemite the game doesn’t work anymore. When I start it up, it crashes and i try again and again but unfortunatly never with success. Please update to support this game with Yosemite.

Really is a great game (1.1.4)

I’m not much of a gamer, but have been looking for something to play for a while having worked my way through Tomb Radier 2. Tropico 5 first caught my attention but after reading many comments that this was better I decided to plump for it instead. The £11.99 price was a factor too (although I see it’s currently at £7.99, which really is a bargain). It’s my first Tropcio game and not dissapointed at all. The learning curve is perfect: not too hard, not too easy, and there’s plenty of information online to help. I’m on Level 12 of 20 in the main campaign and it’s started getting a bit repetative but that’s the only critism. I’ve still got all the extra missions and DLC to go. Works on full settings on a 2011 iMac (2.7GHz, 20GB RAM), the detail zooming into the builidngs and people is genuinely amazing. On my 2009 MacBook Pro (2.26GHz, 4GB RAM) it only runs smoothy on the lowest settings, but this doesn’t distract much from the game. Check your Mac works on GameAgent beforehand if you aren’t sure. Only critism as others have said is the camera, it’s not the easiest to control, certainly better with a Magic Mouse than a trackpad. Go out and buy it though, especially if it’s on offer. You won’t be disappointed!

Who really needs to fork out for Sim CIty, when Tropico is a much much better game. Its entertaining, user friendly, and will keep you occupied.

Game Crashes (1.1.3)

Does not work with mavericks, crashes on load, wasted money, quite annoyed

Pretty Good (1.1.3)

I have to say I’m positively impressed with the game! It does not seem to be very popular but it’s involving, has a nice tropical athmosphere and can be very detailed (for example, you can see the details of which builder is currently building your stuff). Works fine on my Late 2013 MacBook Pro with Retina display (OS X 10.9.1). It crashed on the first run but then I ran it again and didn’t crash since. One minor gripe is that it’s not really suitable for maxing out resolution (2880x1800) because the text becomes tiny. You can still lower the resolution and increase anti-aliasing to compensate.

Tropico 4 1.1.3 doesn’t work on OS X 10.9.1 (1.1.3)

Being a fan of Tropico and having got Tropico 3 on my 2011 MacBook Pro 17” (which works). I decided to download Tropico 4 Gold Edition taking note of the compatbility which states 10.7.5 or later. The game downloaded. I got to the main menu, choose game play and choose the island and then it CRASHED!! I’m very disappointed and now waiting for a refund for a game I’m unable to play. :(
